The Different Types of Magnesium
Magnesium is a positively charged molecule and therefore possesses the ability to bind to a multitude of other ingredients. When it does, you get a wide range of magnesium medications that are available. Because magnesium is so beneficial to the body, these combinations are helpful for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the different types of magnesium, and what they’re commonly used for.
Magnesium citrate is the most common form of magnesium, due in part to its natural occurrence in citrus fruits. As the name suggests, magnesium citrate is magnesium bound to citric acid. This form of magnesium is most easily purchased online, and it’s more bioavailable than other forms of magnesium, meaning that it’s most easily absorbed by the body. Magnesium citrate is used to replenish low magnesium levels, and occasionally for constipation and potential relief from anxiety and depression.
Magnesium oxide is a compound that combines magnesium with oxygen in the form of a salt. It’s the main ingredient in milk of magnesia, which is a popular constipation relief medication that is sold over the counter. In addition to constipation, it’s also used to treat heartburn, indigestion, and even migraine headaches. Unlike magnesium citrate, the body does not absorb magnesium oxide very well whatsoever, so it’s not suggested for those with low magnesium levels.
Magnesium chloride is another salt made with magnesium and chlorine. This form of magnesium is very easily absorbed by the body, boosting your magnesium levels. While it’s often taken orally, it may be added to topical treatments as well. Magnesium chloride is great for soothing and relaxing sore muscles.
When magnesium binds to lactic acid, you get magnesium lactate. Magnesium lactate is actually used as a food additive to regulate the acidity of foods, as well as fortify them. It’s easily absorbed and great for those who need larger doses of magnesium but don’t tolerate other forms as well.
Similar to magnesium lactate is magnesium malate, which is made by combining magnesium with malic acid. It’s also used to enhance flavoring in foods and adds an acidic and sour taste. Magnesium malate is also absorbed well and is helpful for replenishing your body’s natural stores of magnesium. While the effects are only anecdotal, magnesium malate is sometimes recommended for mitigating the symptoms of chronic diseases like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Magnesium taurate is made with the amino acid taurine. Together, the taurine and magnesium help regulate blood sugar and blood pressure to improve heart health. Scientific studies concluding these effects have only been done on mice though, and more human studies are needed to conclude any benefits.
Magnesium sulfate is a form of magnesium you’ve heard of, even if you don’t know it! Magnesium sulfate is made by combining magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen, more commonly called Epsom salt. Magnesium sulfate is often sold as a bath additive that helps relieve sore muscles and reduce stress.
Magnesium glycinate is a form of magnesium that’s combined with another amino acid, glycine. Glycine plays important roles in the body like helping build muscles, improve sleep, and reduce inflammatory conditions like heart disease. Combined with magnesium, glycine is believed to possibly reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia.
Magnesium orotate contains orotic acid, which is a substance that helps build DNA in the body. Studies are still in the works, but magnesium orotate is believed to potentially fight the effects of congestive heart failure and management energy production of the heart and blood vessel tissue. More research is needed though, especially seeing how much more expensive this form of magnesium is.
